Mysterium is an annual fan get-together in North America, held in mid-summer. It is typically scheduled over a long weekend, from Friday to Sunday, although many stay a little longer (predominantly to recoup travel costs through additional sightseeing).

It is organized by the Mysterium Committee, which also has Cyan employee RAWA as one of its members.

[edit] Current status

On July 23rd, 2007, key committee members Scraper^[1] and Ran^[2] announced their respective resignations. Alahmnat, CAGrayWolf, The World, Tweek, vaaht and other fans stepped up in response to explore Mysterium's future organization^[3].

In early 2008, the new Mysterium committee consisted of: vaaht, Alahmnat, The World, CAGrayWolf, Eleri, Oscelot, SR388, Lehsa, Blade Lakem and RAWA (as Cyan Worlds liasion). vaaht resigned on May 21st, citing personal conflicts as the reason.^[4]

Mysterium averages close to one hundred participants each year.

A voting process determines the location of next year's convention. Previous locations were:

2001: Carlsbad, NM, USA
2002: Philadelphia, PA, USA
2003: Spokane, WA, USA

2006: Spokane, WA, USA
2007: Los Angeles, CA, USA

So far, every third year, Spokane has been the chosen city; this is combined with an afternoon visit of Cyan Worlds's headquarters — making Spokane Mysteriums the main (and sometimes only) way for fans to meet Cyan employees in person; this day usually has additional people temporarily joining the convention. Even when not located in Spokane, however, a number of Cyan employees participate, or videos and/or other fan teasers are shown.

The Carlsbad location was baffling to many fans at its time; for most, the revelation that Eddy County — of which Carlsbad is the county seat — happens to also be the (fictional) location of the volcano and Cleft, and thus presumably also close to the Lodge and Tomahna, didn't occur until much later.

Mysterium 2007 took place in Los Angeles, CA, USA, on the weekend of July 20th to 22nd. That Comic Con ^(Wikipedia) took place the following weekend in San Diego in the same state made it easy for people interested in attending both.

After putting out a request for bids for locations and having a community-wide poll, the Mysterium committee announced that Mysterium 2008 would be in Boston, MA, USA on the weekend of July 25, 2008 ^{(Leesahn 18, 9664)}.
