MYSTlore talk:Media playback

Originally from Talk:Main Page; largely irrelevant now with the existence of this custom extension:

There exists a simple and effective Google Video extension for MediaWiki. It could prove useful for linking to trailers — in theory. In practice, Google Video hosts very few Myst-related trailers, especially compared to YouTube, for which there appears to be no comparable such extension, although it shouldn't be that hard to adjust the code. Would it be of use to upload Myst videos to Google Video ourselves?
I'd pretty much rule out self-hosting, because such files are large, which means much space and much bandwidth.
With one exception, that is: panoramic videos, i.e. QuickTime VR. Those don't work in Google Video or YouTube (Flash Video has no equivalent VR support), so we should host them ourselves. Panoramas can be especially useful to show an entire scene in an Age. QED has a QuickTime extension for their MediaWiki, but apparently wrote it themselves and don't intend to share it. Writing our own might not be too hard, but I'd rather not. Chucker 21:15, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
