[edit] Life on Riven
Katran never felt she fit in among the other Rivenese during her childhood, but did have close friends, such as Eti and Eavan. She was a member of Gehn's recreation of the Guild system, and learned D'ni and The Art. Her dream-like writing style created links to impossible-seeming worlds. After influencing Eavan to question Gehn, she felt responsible for his subsequent execution. But she was trusted by Gehn and allowed to travel to K'veer.
There she met Anna, who convinced her to help Atrus. Katran and two of her cousins cared for Atrus after he was found half-drowned in a pool, and afterwards she and Atrus became close. He was unable to pronounce Katran correctly, thus giving her the name Catherine. It was at this time that Gehn told her of his intention to marry her, and she played along so that even Atrus was fooled when he was recaptured by Gehn. Together with Anna she made drastic, but short-term, changes to Riven which allowed her and Atrus to escape and trap Gehn on that Age.
[edit] Myst and the return to Riven
Katran married Atrus and they had two sons, Sirrus and Achenar. She would later look back on the early years on Myst as an idyllic time which ended with the death of Anna. As this was due to a visit to one of Catherine's Ages, Catherine again felt responsible for the death of someone close and Wrote little afterwards. While Atrus explored his Ages and aided their inhabitants, Catherine mostly stayed on Myst.
This period of her life ended when Sirrus and Achenar tricked her into going to Riven as a part of their devious plans. She fell in with the Black Moiety, a group of rebels inspired by her defiance of Gehn, and became a messianic leader for them, writing an Age, Tay, to be their new home.
Unfortunately she was captured by Gehn, who interrogated her to try to learn why she had returned and where the Moiety's hideout was. Eventually she was freed by The Stranger and brought the Rivenese villagers to safety in Tay before reuniting with Atrus and the final collapse of Riven.
[edit] Later Years
Katran helped Atrus in his attempt to rebuild D'ni and the expedition to Terahnee, where she became interested in the prophecies of both branches of Ronay, in their predictions of the current events of Terahnee and the future of D'ni.
After it was decided that a new Age should be written for the D'ni survivors, Catherine and Atrus dwelt in Tomahna, where they raised their new daughter, Yeesha, knowing something of the destiny she would have in the future. Catherine was essential in making Atrus realizing the properties under which Releeshahn should be written, reminding him the principles of the Ages of J'nanin.
Catherine always felt a longing for her imprisoned sons and she believed that Anna's death caused Atrus to lose himself, neglecting thus the kids when they were little. She used to look on them through the Crystal viewer. This was not enough and insisted Linking chambers built in their prison Ages so that they could link there. She finally decided to Write one into each Prison Age, and that way, contact between parents and sons was reestablished. Unfortunately this was a way for Sirrus to escape.
Years later after the death of their sons, Catherine and Atrus bade Yeesha farewell when she went out into the desert to find that destiny.
Catherine passed away sometime before the events of Myst V. The circumstances of her death are unknown.
[edit] Writings
Like other members of the family she married into, she was a keeper of journals which became essential in the reconstruction of D'ni history by the DRC.
