KI
From MYSTlore
The KIs were first discovered on the 2nd of November, 2001 by Victor Laxman. They were originally created by the D'ni with their the Maintainers Guild using them extensively. When D'ni fell, the KI were on the verge of being released to the D'ni elite. When the DRC first discovered the KI, it received its name because of the D'ni "3" that was inscribed on the back, resembling the letters KI.

[edit] History
There have been many different types of KI recovered and used during the restoration of D'ni. Many of the models have since been tampered with by the DRC, specifically Victor Laxman to get them functional but also to allow them to be used by humans with human technology. Below is a short timeline of the work done on the KI.
[edit] Timeline of KI work
- 2nd of November, 2001: Victor Laxman discovers KI prototypes.
- 6th of February, 2002: Victor Laxman converts KI prototype 1 from D'ni letters to Roman letters before the DRC make the prototype KI available for research purposes.
- 11th of February, 2002: The KI is updated.
- 15th of February, 2002: Newer KI prototypes are made available.
- 27th of February, 2002: The KI is enhanced by allowing emotes along each KI's ID displayed.
- 1st of March, 2002: Functions connected with ahyoheek tables and the KI are discovered.
- 12th of March, 2002: Newer KI prototypes are discovered. Testing on them begins.
- 19th of March, 2002: Testing finishes on the newer KI prototypes and they are made available, although not all of the KI's functions are repaired and activated.
- 29th of March, 2002: Incremental improvements on the latest KI prototypes are continued to be made. It is also announced that linking near ahyoheek tables disturbs the KI sensors which caused the game to malfunction.
- 2nd of April, 2002: Great improvements had been made by Victor Laxman, especially in interfacing human technology with the KI.
- 13th of April, 2002: Newer KI prototypes were made available in Tokotah I.
- 30th of April, 2002: A series of inter-age KI communication tests were approved.
- 17th of May, 2002: Significant progress had been made with the KI by Victor Laxman, however the Annex was critical for inter-age communication among other issues.
- 8th of June, 2002: Work on inter-age KI functionality as well as photo capabilities is in its final steps.
- 27th of August, 2002: Victor Laxman and his team began work on sound capabilities with the KI.
- 27th of January, 2003: Shortly before, Restoration Engineer Steve discovers a large collection of Class-G KIs. Work also continues on the location feature of the KI. Victor Laxman plans on employing the use of the Class-G KI soon.
- 24th of July, 2003: Trouble in resolving KI identification and the neighborhood imagers displaying text occurs.
- 2007: Victor Laxman continues research and engineering on the KI system.
[edit] Models
Various models of the KI have been discovered. Below is a list of the different models and their functions. All of the KIs have a display that creates holographic images with a blasted lattice compression system. Most of the processing and control takes place on the KI host, the Lattice.
A function from the C-Class KI and future KIs is the ability to generate 3 lists of people. They are:
- Other activated KI units within an Age.
- Individuals who have been specified. It's possible that this was to allow temporary or semi-permanent team missions to communicate with each other. The DRC revived this function as a friends list.
- Groups that are somehow related to the Nexus. The DRC revived this function to support Neighborhoods.
[edit] Prototype 1
The only known function of this model was text communication within Ages and storage.
[edit] Prototype 2
The functions were:
- Text communication within Ages.
- Functions connected with ahyoheek tables.
- Functions connected to the D'ni transit access were somehow connected with these models as well.
On the 27th of February, 2002, the following functions were added:
- Emotes.
- Publicly displayed IDs.
[edit] Prototype 3
The functions were:
- Text communication between Ages as well as within Ages.
- Emotes
- Publicly displayed IDs
- Ahyoheek tables functionality
- Nexus functionality
- Photo capabilities
[edit] Prototype 4
The functions were:
- Text communication between Ages as well as within Ages.
- Emotes.
- Publicly displayed IDs.
- Ahyoheek tables functionality.
- Nexus functionality.
- Photo capabilities.
- Slightly larger in appearance then prototype 3.
- Larger storage capability then prototype 3.
[edit] C-Class KI
The functions originally were:
- Text communication between Ages as well as within Ages.
- Emotes.
- Publicly displayed IDs.
- Ahyoheek tables functionality.
- Nexus functionality.
- Photo capabilities.
- 15 display modes.
On the 23rd of July, 2002, the following changes were made:
- Display modes are changed to allow a cleaner interface and slightly more viewing area.
- Translation software is improved.
- Font display is improved to allow the characters to be more legible.
- Displayed numbers from 0 to 5 are now in Arabic numerals rather then D'ni numerals.
- A filing system on the KI host is initiated to allow items to be sorted.
- A larger image display is added.
On the 28th of July, 2002, the following changes were made:
- The display mode is changed to a range of mode 9 as a minimum to mode 11 as a maximum.
- All numbers that are displayed are now in Arabic numerals.
- List of frequent people who send messages along with a filing mode is now functional.
- KI now generates 3 lists of people based on different criteria.
- Instant communication is now functional within maintainer age zones, which is a function of mode 9.
- Delayed communications is only available outside of the maintainer age zones, which is a function of mode 11.
[edit] G-Class KI
The functions originally were:
- Text communication between Ages as well as within Ages.
- Emotes.
- Publicly displayed IDs.
- Functions connected with ahyoheek tables.
- Functions connected to the D'ni transit access were somehow connected with these models as well.
- Photo capabilities.
- 15 display modes.
- Display modes are changed to allow a cleaner interface and slightly more viewing area.
- D'ni numerals are converted to Arabic numerals.
- Items and frequent KI senders can be sorted.
- Emits a signal that can be detected by Victor Laxman.
[edit] Current Model of KI
The functions are:
- Text communication between Ages as well as within Ages.
- Emotes.
- Publicly displayed IDs.
- Functions connected with ahyoheek tables.
- Functions connected to the D'ni transit access were somehow connected with these models as well.
- Photo capabilities.
- 15 display modes.
- Display modes are changed to allow a cleaner interface and slightly more viewing area.
- D'ni numerals are converted to Arabic numerals.
- Items and frequent KI senders can be sorted.
- Emits a signal that can be located detected by Victor Laxman.
- Voice communication for people within an area is functional.
- Markers can be dropped and collected via KIs.
- Doors in Gahreesen are controlled by the KI with basic versions being able to open Level 1 doors while more advanced KIs are required for levels 2 and higher.
[edit] Software
There is software mentioned by Victor Laxman involved in the use of KIs. The only information available about is that version 0.89 of the software corrected most of the graphic anomalies. This could be the same software that Restoration Engineers Mark and Eric worked on that was called the KI "threshold" software.
- A list of commands and functions for the current version of the KI can be found here
[edit] Distribution
The majority of KIs are currently distributed through KI Dispensers in Gahreesen, however, in the past, Victor Laxman has manually replaced KIs for some people when upgrading to a newer model. They have also been distributed in Tokotah. It is currently unknown, though, whether they were left in a box or whether there is another KI Dispenser.
There is a KI Dispenser in the eder tomahn reachable using the Bahro stone at the end of Tokotah Alley; until recently it was non-functional. However, from the middle of May, 2007, this dispenser is now active but appears to be defective. It emits a purplish glow along with orange-colored sparks or bits of molten metal. It does not dispense new KIs, however any KI inserted into this dispenser will glow briefly. It appears this glow cannot (presently) be persisted or controlled. It is unclear if there are any long-term effects or damage from the use of this dispenser.
