Fireflies are small bioluminescent insects found in various Ages. There are two main types: those of Eder Kemo and those of D'ni.

This variety is sometimes called cirtE'tam[?] (chirtee'tahm), unattested D'ni for "fire animals". They are yellow and green. They travel in swarms and like to stay near brain trees, however they will follow a person who walks near them. They can link with that person, but the only places they have been successfully taken are Eder Gira and Relto. Curiously, they do not stay with the person in Relto, but seem to thrive there.
These fireflies do not like jumping, water, steam, or running.

Not much is known about the D'ni variety. They are not common and they stay near lamps.

Fireflies have also been seen in the ages of Kadish Tolesa, Direbo, Todelmer (where they are very uncommon) and in the area of Tomahna on Earth.
