Cho (person)
From MYSTlore
Cho is one of the numerous Rivenese villagers who was recruited, willingly or otherwise, to work for Gehn's elite guard during his rise to power on Riven. Garbed in what is perhaps a D'ni uniform — a white tailcoat, jodhpurs, and a helmet sporting Gehn’s crest, it would seem that Gehn either commissioned uniforms for all of his underlings, or at least made sure Cho made a good impression on whomever may have linked in to the Age. Though the extent of Cho’s duties is unclear, it is known that his primary responsibility – as Gehn refers to him in his personal journal as his “guard” – is to monitor the linking cage on Temple Island in the hopes that someone – hopefully Atrus – would link in.
Considering that Catherine (linking in some 30-odd years after Gehn’s exile) would have been the first outside visitor, Cho’s distracted excitement at seeing anyone in the cage is hardly a surprise. Gehn must have given Cho specific instructions to say “tahgemah b’zoo ah rekor” (“give me the book”) and to take whatever book Atrus might have been carrying, logically assuming that it would have been a Linking Book, which would have finally provided him with an escape.
Upon The Stranger’s arrival, Cho approached the cage speaking Rivenese, in his excitement, interspersed with broken D’ni. What he ends up reciting is “tahg-em-ah… re-ko-ah (stutters) tah… tah… tah… tahg-em-ah b'soo re-ko-ah”. And since the Stranger did not speak D'ni, Cho just took the Trap book from him.
Unfortunately for Cho, he was knocked unconscious by a Moiety blow dart and was thrown under a cliff. However soon he recovered and returned to Gehn, failing to ever deliver the linking book in question since it was taken to Tay.
[edit] Background
“Cho” is not his name, but a nickname derived from the first word he says in his speech ("Chooooo?") when he first sees the Stranger; it is presumably an exclamation of surprise in Rivenese. It is unclear whether the nickname was developed by the fans, or by Cyan themselves. "Cho" is officially used as the name of a server of Cyan.
Cho is seen again only in the non-canon 'losing' endings of Riven. For example when the player traps himself in Atrus' Trap Book, the Book will eventually be found by Gehn's men. Gehn then will order terrified Cho to link in the book so as to change places with the player; the player will therefore be automatically freed... only to be exectuted by Gehn right after.
