Canon
From MYSTlore
(Redirected from Canonical)
This page is written from an OOC point of view. Events and elements surrounding the Myst Universe are regarded as fictional.
In the Myst universe, Canon encompasses a defined amount of aspects from the three novels, the five Myst games and the various incarnations of Uru. As Cyan holds the trademarks and copyrights to most of the relevant pieces of the Myst universe, the lines of canon are typically drawn by them.
It is best defined by what is not canon. This can be separated into several categories:
- Any use of artistic license is not canon. For example, while both Myst and Riven make use of the trap book concept as a central part of their respective storylines, it is considered non-canon. Moreover, the depiction of Myst Island in Myst is not canon.
- At the moment, any fan fiction outside Myst Online: Uru Live is not canon either. Fan fiction typically takes a canon storyline and adds non-canonical components onto it. Thus far, there are no known cases of fan fiction having been approved into canon, though this may change in the future.
- As a very notable exception, anything that occurs in Myst Online: Uru Live becomes canon automatically, whether intentional or not, and whether initiated or approved by Cyan or not. As such, MO:UL is a canonical platform for fan fiction.
