Aitrus (9312 - 9400 DE (1657 - 1745 AD)) was the son of Kahlis and Tasera and the grandfather of Atrus. Although his name and Atrus's are spelled the same in D'ni (Atrus[?]), they are transliterated differently into Roman letters, to differentiate between the two.

Aitrus followed his father into the Guild of Surveyors and participated in the construction of the tunnel to the surface. During this he became friends with his childhood enemy Veovis and saved his life, earning a vow of gratitude. He became a Guild Master at the very young age of 38, and was soon elected to the Council.

His family gave hospitality to Anna, a woman from the surface, and he taught her the Art, working together with her on Writing Gemedet. When it was discovered that he was allowing an ahrotahn to travel to other Ages, his family's books were confiscated and he resigned from the Council in shame. After Anna and his friend Master Kedri found a precedent, the books were restored. Some time later Aitrus asked Anna to marry him and she accepted. It was necessary to have the union approved by the Guild Council, and all were in favor except one: Veovis, outraged by the mingling of D'ni and non-D'ni blood. He only relented when Aitrus reminded him of his promise, but declared their friendship at an end.

Aitrus returned to the Council and became a leader of the liberal faction that sought to improve the condition of the lower classes. After receiving a mysterious letter, he met with A'gaeris and was shown evidence that Veovis was trading in illegal books. This led to the arrest and incarceration of Veovis, although Aitrus worried that he was indeed innocent.

Aitrus and Anna had a son, Gehn. Gehn was sickly at first and almost died, with D'ni Healers blaming it on his mixed blood. He lived, though, and joined the Guild of Book Makers at the standard age of four.

In the Fall of D'ni Aitrus was infected by the plague when he linked to a contaminated Guild Age where many of the leaders of D'ni had died, including his father. After burying their bodies, he mapped the tunnels to the surface as a way of escape. Back in the cavern he encountered a dying Veovis, who told him A'gaeris had captured Anna and Gehn and gave him a link to K'veer via one of Veovis's Ages. There Aitrus found the Descriptive Book of Ederat, an Age holding all the books A'gaeris and Veovis had collected. He altered Ederat to make it an inferno, and when A'gaeris arrived Aitrus claimed he was going to burn the books in that Age and linked through, sacrificing himself for his wife and child. A'gaeris followed, and there both died.

It is revealed that Gehn is using the maps in his journals to find his way around the cavern. (In this case, Aitrus's name is transliterated "Atrus".)
